The Parakou Urban Transport Project will contribute to poverty reduction in the ZIP Project’s Area of Influence by improving access to basic social services and strengthening the activities of women and other disadvantaged groups through socioeconomic activities. Parakou is the country’s third largest city with over 200,000 inhabitants and the capital of one of Benin’s most productive regions. The poor condition and narrowness of the two main roads that cross it constitutes a major constraint to the development of urban economic activities and causes numerous traffic accidents. In addition, the heavy traffic congestion on these roads hinders national and international traffic and affects the competitiveness of the North-South corridor. The project includes the rehabilitation of 17.55 km of the city’s main roads to 2×2 lanes. The development of the city of Parakou will make it attractive, which will stimulate agricultural production and improve household incomes in the Department of Borgou as well as the country’s competitiveness. The project activities will be carried out from June 2015 to December 2020.
